Student Representative Council (SRC) are selected twice each year from every class. Students hold this position for a semester. They are inducted in a ceremony held at the beginning of each semester. SRCs meet fortnightly with selected staff to discuss various events, activities, and processes to drive new or continuing initiatives around the school.
Before the selection process, many opportunities arise for students to display leadership qualities within the classroom environment and participate in class activities and discussions. Students who show leadership skills are acknowledged by staff and all students are encouraged to show leadership, whether formalised through the SRC process or not. Many students who do not undertake SRC roles show significant leadership within the classroom and schoolyard.
Appropriate candidates must uphold the school values, lead by good example, listen to other’s needs and concerns, create a caring and safe school environment, and support each other in their leadership roles. Like community leadership, the process is held with democratic principles, and as such, some students may hold SRC roles more than once while at St Joseph’s. To ensure a variety of students have the opportunity to undertake the SRC role, students who held the role the previous two years are excluded from nominations the following year.
